How to choose a website chat: 10 questions to ask

Chat tools look similar on their homepages. The differences show up in the pricing model, how AI is billed and how much work setup takes. These questions help you compare fairly.

By the TullyDesk Chat team ·

1. How is the price calculated?

Chat tools are priced per agent seat, per conversation, per workspace or as a flat plan. Work out your monthly cost with your real team size and chat volume, not the lowest number on the pricing page.

2. Is AI included, or billed separately?

Many tools charge for AI as an add-on, per resolution or per session. Ask what one AI answer costs at your volume, and what happens when you reach the limit.

3. Is there a real free plan?

A free plan with no time limit lets you test on your own website, with your own visitors, before you pay.

4. Does the AI answer only from your content?

Your AI should answer from your information and say when it doesn’t know, instead of guessing.

5. How does the handoff to a person work?

Check that conversations move smoothly to your team, with the visitor’s details and the full history.

6. Can your team reply from a phone?

A mobile app with notifications means you can answer from anywhere.

7. Which channels are included?

If customers message you on WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger, look for one inbox that covers them.

8. Where do leads go?

Check integrations with the tools you already use: your CRM, email marketing, Slack and Google Analytics.

9. Can you run more than one website or brand?

Agencies and multi-location businesses should check whether each site needs its own paid account.

10. How long does setup take?

The best tools are live in minutes with one line of code or a plugin, without a long implementation project.
