How to capture more leads with your website chat

A visitor who asks a question is already interested. Chat gives you the perfect moment to ask for their contact details, if you ask at the right time and give something in return.

Why chat beats a contact form

Contact forms ask for information before giving anything back. Many visitors skip them, especially on phones. In a chat, the visitor gets help first, and sharing an email feels like a natural next step: “Want me to send you the details?”

Pick the right moment to ask

There are three common moments, and each suits a different business:

  • Before the chat starts: best when every conversation needs follow-up, such as quotes or appointments.
  • After the first helpful answer: the friendliest option, and a good default for most websites.
  • Only when a person is needed: best when you mainly want to answer questions and only follow up when the AI can’t help.

Whatever you choose, ask each visitor only once. Asking again in every conversation is annoying.

Give a reason to share

People share contact details when they get something back. Good offers include:

  • A quote, estimate or price list sent by email.
  • A first-order discount code.
  • A callback at a time that suits them.
  • A reminder before an appointment or event.

Use proactive messages on high-intent pages

Your pricing, contact and booking pages attract the visitors closest to buying. A short, specific message there, such as “Want a quick quote? Tell me what you need,” followed by a request for an email, turns more of them into leads.

Follow up fast

A lead goes cold quickly. Send new leads straight to the tools your team already watches: an email alert, a Slack channel, your CRM or your email marketing list. Keep the conversation attached to the lead, so whoever follows up knows exactly what the visitor asked.

Measure what works

  • Leads collected per week, and from which pages.
  • How many conversations end with an email.
  • Which proactive messages lead to the most leads.
  • How many leads become customers.

Doing this in TullyDesk Chat

TullyDesk Chat lets you choose when to ask for a name and email, collects leads in Flows, saves every lead with its conversation in Contacts, and sends leads to email, Slack, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Zapier and Make, depending on your plan.
